Total Football Soccer Show #18: World Cup 2010 Group C in Depth

A little late posting this one as it was broadcast by WRIR last week, on December 17th. But I do have an excuse. I’m home for Christmas and so approximately 3,667 miles away from the studio. Taylor was joined by Albert Ottati and Josh Stankus, who both did fantastic jobs behind the mics.

The trio discussed World Cup Group C, paying particular attention to the USA team, including having a go at picking a first XI. Brian Ching is apparently the Rodney Dangerfield of international football, because he can’t get no respect from these three.

Some trivia to close as usual. This week it’s a nicknames redux, with Taylor challenging Albert and Josh to guess the team from the nickname in a first to three challenge.

Total Football Soccer Show #17: England vs USA, World Cup 5-a-side Teams and World Cup Nicknames

The Total Football Soccer Show is back after a two week Thanksgiving+business trip related hiatus. If you’ve listened before, you’ll know the show is hosted by an Englishman and an American (Americ-man?). So we open the show by talking about the World Cup 2010 draw and the all kinds of exciting England vs USA game that will open Group C.

After that, we each pick a 5-a-side team of World Cup-bound players. All we need to do now is persuade all ten selected players to show at our local Bryan Park soccer complex and it’s game one.

We close with a twist on the spelling bee. And by “twist” I mean “departure”. Because instead of challenging each other to spell player names, we each pick three World Cup team nicknames for the other to identify.

Quick Correction: Was pointed out to me via phone call that Japan did in fact make out of their group in World Cup 2002. So when you hear me claim that they didn’t in this week’s show, just ignore me.

Just a quick reminder from Taylor and myself that the Total Football Soccer Show is still alive and kicking. We took last week off for Thanksgiving, and then Taylor was away on business this week. But he did find time to call me up on the phone to make his excuses, and to do a very (very very) brief preview of Friday’s World Cup 2010 draw.

This week’s show is 100% Asian football. We don’t pretend to be experts. We don’t pretend that we didn’t do a lot of Wikipedia reading in the 24 hours before recording. But we feel like we’ve put together a nice little overview of Asian soccer, with a little entertainment too.

We also visit the Richmond Asian-American Indoor Soccer Tournament, learn how South Koreans feel about North Korea’s World Cup qualification, list our Top 5 Favourite Asian players and get a definitive(ish) answer to the eternal question: Is it Park Ji-Sung or Ji-Sung Park? As always (and love it or hate it) we close with a spelling bee. No prizes for guessing this week’s theme.

This week’s topic: retirement. When should players retire from professional football? And what are their options after hanging up their boots? Not everyone can take up polo like Batigol did. Though maybe more should.

Also, since not all players are keen to retire, we list our Top 5 Players who played into their forties, featuring dietary tips from Gordon Strachan (hint: it involves bananas and a masher).
