Total Football Soccer Show#27: The League of the Future?

By: Daryl | February 18th, 2010

styling_house_of_the_future_00Something a little different on the 27th episode of the Total Football Soccer Show. After establishing that the English Premier League, Italian Serie A and Spanish La Liga are the big three, with the German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 not too far behind, we ask: “Who’s next?”

Not “which is the sixth best league?” More, which of the current non-big-5 leagues has the potential to join them in the future? The distant future where we all drive flying cars.

With Taylor as moderator/dictator we have the 16 nominated leagues playoff against each other in a bracket to determine the “league of the future”. Along the way we ask: Will flying cars will be gas or hydrogen powered? Will MLS get big before global warming kills us all? And who’s more famous: the Kaizer Chiefs or the Kaiser Chiefs? Also, Spoiler Alert: the ending of the movie Red Dawn is revealed. So don’t listen unless you know what happens Wolverines.

Due to time (and maybe knowledge) constraints, a couple of leagues get short shrift. If you’re a fan of one of those leagues then 1) Sorry, but 2) Please feel free to make the case for your league here in the comments or by sending an email to soccer[at]wrir.org, and we’ll hopefully read any feedback out on the air. So without further ado, the bracket is below, followed by the big “play” button for the podcast, and links for iTunes and Facebook.

Japan wins it’s division and I would give Greece the division over Turkey due to the (relative) success of their champions league teams.

The Southwest division is hard to call but I would give the MLS the nod down the stretch. The MLS isn’t even 15 years old and it’s popularity seems to be growing if only a little bit each year. However, the quality of the football being played must get drastically better if it ever hopes to attain a global profile.

I think the Southeast division is really only between the Eredivisie and the SuperLiga but I would give it to the Eredivisie based on their higher UEFA coefficient and their (slightly) higher number of teams.

As for the winner of the final four I pick the Eredivisie.

I agree with Andre…Brazillian football is probably as competative as any of those non big three leagues.

i think turkey and russia will improve to the be the 6 and 7 teams, because they have money and can draw on more then their own country for support. turkey gets wore viewers form other islamic country’s in the middle east and asia. while, russia gets views and support form the balkans and eastern europe.

they will because good leagues and regulars in the European compititions.

and in europe i see portugal and the netherlands becoming like argintina and brazil and getting relegated to second class statis, and being feeder leagues for europes other leagues, and having their stars return at the end of their careers.

but in maybe 50 years i see australia, japan, and china as the big three in the asian champions league. but my one problem is the fact the the asian confederation wants to force the A-League of australia to expell the team from new zealand that plays in A-League, because NZ is in Oceania Confed.

see this as the Asian Confed shooting itself in the foot, and the asian champions league because they are saying they want to kick out a the team and possible future teams from a country of 5 million people, when conbined the two coutries of australia and NZ only have 27 million people. So, they want to kick out about one 5th of the leagues possible domestic supporters.
