Episode 17: Champions League and Title Races (+ Contest)
By: Ian Rose | April 1st, 2008Well, it’s April, and rather than play any nasty tricks on you the way Matt at the Celtic blog did on me, we bring you a preview of the Champions League quarterfinals starting later today. We’ll go through each of the four matchups, and tell you what we think. If last round is any guide, bet against me and you’re well on your way to riches. This week on the pod, Anne Ramzy, Daryl Grove and Inara also join me in getting our grubby little hands into some Serie A news, including the tight title race and the debacle at AC Milan.
And, this week, we offer you, our listeners more than just twenty-five minutes of football chatter. We’ve got a giveaway. SoccerPro.com has once again come through for us with a couple of prizes for our podcast predictor contest. For Manchester United and Barcelona fans, we have some team swag for you. We actually have four prizes this week, a sack pack and backpack with each club’s logo.
Here’s the contest. Man U fans predict the score of the Middlesbrough v Man U match this coming weekend. First place will get the Man U backpack. Second place will get the Man U sack pack. If more than one score is correct, all correct guesses will be placed in a hat and drawn at random for the prize. The same goes for Barca fans. Just predict the score of this weekend’s Barcelona v. Getafe match, and we’ll send the winner a Barcelona backpack, and the runner up a Barcelona sack pack. Thanks again to our prize sponsor, SoccerPro.com, for providing the prizes.
Just send your guesses to eunrose [at] gmail [dot] com (there seems to be a problem with the podcast email), any time before kickoff of those games, and thanks again for listening. As always, you can listen to the podcast in the player below, or go to our feed to subscribe to the show.
Also, if you like Nike boots, SoccerPro is giving away a pair of Nike Vapor boots for the next day or so.

Do current pod participants get a guess?

(Can I quietly say here - and I accept the lightning strike I’m about to get - Roma fans will miss Totti, but feel like they may even have a better chance without him….)

Chris - That’s really interesting. If you get a chance before or after the game, I’d love to hear why you think that is, because it seems to us Roma outsiders like a big disadvantage.
Ryan - Send in your pick(s).

Well, he’s faster and provides more width to stretch the defense - and he has a pretty great workrate getting back when lining up in the center. They surely could’ve used him today, but I’m not sure it would have mattered.

Ian, I must admit that you brighten up my weeks. I love you. I love Anne Ramzy, Inara, Darryl Grove, Cristian, and all the other great podcasters.
Please… Never stop. Please.

Wow. That’s far and away the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about the podcast. I really appreciate it. We’re not planning on stopping, and if anything, keep trying to build it up more and add more to it. Thanks a lot for the comment, Shaz.

Anne, just saw your USL article on soccernet. Good stuff.
I currently only LIKE you guys. I will also profess my undying LOVE of you Offside Podcasters if you include more USL/MLS chatter in future episodes. And come record an episode at the April 26 Timbers vs sounders match in the Woodshed in PGE Park here in Portland.

Lucas - Well, we’re currently adding an MLS member to the pod, and we have Anne talking about USL, plus I’m headed off to see the Timbers play a friendly in a few days, so we may just get your love yet.
