Episode 23: Neil Dunkin and US Soccer Report
By: Ian Rose | May 15th, 2008After a number of hurdles, we’re happy to say that we have finally gotten (somewhat) the knack of phone interviews, and so we are thrilled this week to welcome our first featured guest on the show, lifelong Liverpool fan and author Neil Dunkin, whose book “Anfield of Dreams” takes readers through the ups and downs of 50 years following the most successful club in English football. Neil talks to us about some of his favorite moments and players over the years, and I try not to gush too audibly as we talk about Scotland and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, who Neil had the pleasure of seeing in his prime. We also talk about the state of English international play, the 6-5 rule, and various other topics.
Because of the interview, we cut back to three regular podcasters this week, and since we’ve been a bit neglectful of U.S. coverage lately, we dedicate the second part of the show to catching up with the MLS and USL. New York Red Bull Offside blogger Dave Martinez talks about his Bulls’ weekend win over the Galaxy, and the secret to controlling the Landid Beckhovan scoring machine. ESPN’s Anne Ramzy gets us up to date with the USL-1, including the first sputters in the Portland Timbers’ still-undefeated season, the shock rise of the Minnesota Thunder, and more.
As always, you can listen to the show on the player below, or go to our feed to subscribe. And of course, you can get all Web 2.0 on our ass, by joining us on our Facebook page. Thanks for listening.

haha, I guess Blanco being MVP is about as possible as Rafa Marquez being chosen(if he were to play in MLS) in a world of kobe jones fans.

Cheers Matt – we appreciate the comment. And Steve … I try to be neutral as often as possible, I really do. I just fail a lot. Next time we do USL coverage, I’ll be sure to spend a little more time on all the USL Offside pages and have points there to refer to.

*golf clap* – nice job boys and girl. Love the USL love. You didn’t mention the Brian Schmetzer “wide stance” scandal, but still good stuff. Anne: please tell me you’re not rooting for Seattle? Jesus weeps…
@Steve – a shout out for what? Your post about hairdos? Try writing about the team once in a while.

Speaking of Neutral, isnt Dave a Boca fan. I guess that the reason for all the Schletto talk. lol
Then again my only interest in MLS is Cuauh, so Im not exactly informed.

Albert – you got me. What can I say?
But man, tell me he isnt the engine behind that Columbus team? Nearly every positive play on the field has been Schelotto inspired.
He would be my #2 in MVP voting, behind the “unstoppable” Lando.

I admit my MLS ignorance, so I wouldnt doubt the Schelotto influence. I did go to mlsnet for the first time this year and did see Cbus in 1st spot, so they must be doing something right.
I consider lando good, but if the team blows, his value is irrelevant. I guess they are improved this year though.

Lucas: I support 2 teams on the very opposite ends of the spectrum. Man Utd and California Victory
