The Total Football Soccer Show – Episode 8 – Top 5 Most Interesting Derbies in World Football

By: Daryl | September 24th, 2009

This week’s show is dominated by a 14 minute behemoth of a Top 5.

Following the Manchester derby controversy (also discussed, inevitably, and in hindsight rather belatedly) we decided to list our top 5 “most interesting” derbies in world football, and why we find them so interesting.

To fit as many in as possible, we compared lists to avoid any duplication. Here’s what we ended up with:

Taylor:
5. Rangers vs Celtic
4. Dinamo Zagreb vs Red Star Belgrade
3. Al-Ahly vs Zamalek
2. Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce
1. Man Utd vs Liverpool

Daryl:
5. Roma vs Lazio
4. Boca vs River
3. LA Galaxy vs Chivas USA
2. Brazil vs Argentina
1. Barcelona vs Real Madrid

Obviously some big games got left out. Please email any glaring omissions to soccer[at]wrir.org

No problem with your geography andreas. But derbies don’t have to be local.

I think you snuffed this out on your own, but I guess now would be a good time to say I enjoy your radio show Daryl.

I think this is probably the first time MLS has ever gotten any love in any worldwide derbies list. So either MLS has arrived or Daryl threw my MLS-loving self a bone. Hmmm…

Also, love the socio-political analysis of the “darbies.” You can’t really understand rivalries without understanding what really lies beneath the surface.

And I’ve always considered PSG-Marseille to be an interesting rivalry, given that it was originally essentially manufactured by the media. And yet the fans have given it a life of its own. (There is always the threat of violence when the sides meet.)

Thanks Marlon, and thanks Laurie. I wouldn’t say Chivas vs LA Galaxy was really in my top 5 favourite derbies, but I listed it because it’s an interesting example of what MLS maybe needs to do more of.

Definitely wish I’d thought more about the PSG vs Marseille derby though, the media-generated concept is definitely interesting.

It is already quite understandable who the number 1 for both the categories would be. Man Unt. vs Liverpool and Barcelona vs Real Madrid would really be top picks.

kaizer chiefs vs orlando pirates is the biggest in africa and surely is in the top 10 in the world. when this game is played at ellis park stadium or fnb stadium the atmosphere is always more than anything you have ever imagined. i challenge people from other countries to visit south africa next time the soweto derby is played.
